Spring is continuing to blossom across the country. With it, comes the seasonal slowdown we always see during Summer.
1st Quarter National Instant Criminal Background Check (NICS checks) have been posted and they tell an encouraging but cautionary tale. Looking at just the monthly report from the FBI tells the tale we are having the best year ever!!! I encourage you to dig a little deeper to review the Adjusted-NICS checks. NSSF does a great job reporting these numbers and trends. To date it is shaping up to be a great year, but too early to draw any specific conclusions.
The Adjusted-NICS checks take out permit checks, which represents the largest impact to reported trends. Permits do not represent purchases and in some cases they represent a “re-check” where a state such as Kentucky rechecks their complete permit file every month.
Despite all the positive signs, it feels like we are waiting to see what the primary circus will produce for the main event. I use Main Event not in jest but to represent the primary differentiating battle between these two party candidates…The 2nd Amendment. One state's the Supreme Court got it wrong, which can only mean Heller’s ruling that firearm ownership is an individual right, is wrong; while the other party holds all constitutional rights as individual. There has not been a clearer line drawn between Presidential candidates on our issue and the stakes have never been higher.
I hope you have on your calendar the NRA Annual Meetings & Exhibits in Louisville, KY, May 19-22. It’s a great time for us all to learn about the good work being done to protect our Second Amendment rights and browse 500,000 square feet of firearms displays at the Kentucky Exposition Center.
After the NRA show, it’s full speed ahead to the 43rd NASGW Expo & Annual Meeting in Kansas City this October. It will be here before you know it. To help you get prepared, NASGW has launched a new Expo-only website, www.nasgwexpo.org.
This standalone website has all the information you need to get registered, plan your stay, and get the most out of this year’s event. The Expo continues to make its mark as a must-attend event for anyone serious about running a profitable and credible business in the shooting sports industry. Be sure to check out the website and make plans to join us in Kansas City, October 25-28.
Stay informed, stay focused. 2016 is shaping up to be a very unique year.
All the best,
Pete R. Brownell
